Chapter Sixteen
âThanks,â I said, an automatic smile rising for the clerk ringing through the last of my groceries.
Thereâd been no sign of Cal for the past four days. School had shut down for fall break, and every time Iâd called him, it had gone straight to voicemail. Dana had got through once and said he couldnât make the last study session before everyone vanished to the four winds. Apparently, he was sick.
Which was what had sent me out the day before Thanksgiving to a grocery store. Carts clogged every escapable aisle, parents whole-arm sweeping boxes of stuffing and French-fried onions into their baskets. One bounced off the head of their kid, but there was no time to stop and check for wounds. There was turkey to procure and pies to war over.
Hefting the three bags up, I made a beeline for the door. There hadnât been news about the cult eitherâat least, no one had shown up at my door in the middle of the night. That wouldnât have gone well for them stumbling into the den of a naked demon.
I had an entire week ahead of me holed up in the apartment with Ink, living off leftover pre-cooked ham and probably fucking through the parades. It should be the vacation I deserved, but my mind wouldnât stop churning back to Cal.
The sick lie couldnât hold up for long. Why did I let him leave to take on his potentially murderous brother alone? What if he didnât want me there to help? Did he choose to lie low to find his brother, or to help him?
A chilly wind whipped through the parking lot. I finished sliding my groceries in and raised my scarf higher up my cheek. Voices carried across the cement jungle, babies screaming in exhaustion, parents whining with hunger. But none of them seemed to feel the cold bite in the air.
Shaking it off, I reached above my head to grab the trunk to close it. A shadow lurched from the side and my first instinct was to sigh at Ink failing to remain at home. But when the hand snatched at my keys instead of my ass, I spun around in shock.
And my heart dropped.
Black hair, a patched trench coat left open to reveal a shirt clinging to a body that cracked skulls like walnuts. Piercing blue-white eyes.
Mark.
âItâs you.â I sneered, ducking back from the werewolf. With both my hands, I secured my purse tight to my body, though the spell bookâs radiating calm did little to stop the hair rising along my neck.
He twirled my keys on his finger, keeping them just out of reach, like he wanted me to try for them, leaving me wide open for an attack. I hunched my body tighter to my magic book and glared instead.
âLook, green-skin.â Mark snickered, raising his lip in a snarl to reveal a canine so sharp it looked like it belonged to a vampire. I was so focused on that, his shit-talking passed me by. âWhatever game youâre playing at stops here.
